How it works

Selling on TikTok and Instagram without being pushy

Most of your videos are there so people get to know you. Now and then, one mentions what you sell. Here's how they're split and why.

01

What an audience video is

A video for people who don't know you yet: what you get asked, how you work, a common mistake in your field. It doesn't name what you sell. It's the one that gets you found and followed.

02

What a product video is

It covers a topic your audience cares about and names what you sell once, in one natural line, usually at the end. It isn't an ad or a demo: without that line, the video would still be useful.

03

The 80/20 rule for social media

It says about 8 in 10 posts should give the viewer something and 2 can talk about what you sell. That's the Normal level: over a long run it's 1 product video in 5, and the app describes it as 1 in 4 or 5. A little lowers it to 1 in 8 and A lot raises it to 1 in 3.

04

Why never two product videos in a row

Two videos in a row about what you sell stand out: someone who just found you sees two ads and leaves. With at least one audience video in between, each mention comes after something useful. Hop follows the same rule, across the week line too.

05

Why small businesses oversell

When you run a business, every video feels like a chance to sell, and the account ends up looking like a catalogue. But hardly anyone knows a small account yet: first they have to find you through something useful to them. That's what audience videos do.

06

How it changes with your kind of account

A local business talks about its craft and mentions the shop. A digital product teaches something on its topic and mentions the course or the app. Services show how they work and mention they take clients. A personal brand shares its days and mentions its collaborations. You pick the ratio; the kind of account changes what that one line is about.
