Organic reach is the number of different accounts that have seen your content without you paying to show it. If one person watches your video three times, that's three views but one account reached. "Organic" means it arrived through the feed, your profile, search or a share, not through an ad.

What's the difference between reach and views?

Views (or plays) count every time the content is watched. Reach counts people, or more precisely accounts: each one counts once even if it watches the video several times.

That's why views are almost always higher than reach. If the gap is large, people are rewatching, which is usually a good sign for short videos that loop or get saved to come back to.

What is paid reach?

It's what you get by promoting a post: you pay for the platform to show it to more people. Both platforms show organic and promoted figures separately in a promoted post's insights.

Keeping them apart matters. A promoted video has more reach because you paid, not necessarily because it hooked more people. Mix it in with the rest and your normal video looks inflated, so the next ones look worse than they are. If you're thinking about promoting, read whether TikTok Promote is worth it first.

How do you grow organic reach?

There's no switch, but some habits help:

  1. Hook people early: if viewers swipe away straight off, the platform has less reason to show it to more people. Check your retention curve.
  2. Stick to a clear topic, so it reaches the people who care about it.
  3. Make content that gets shared or saved: a useful list, a specific answer.
  4. Post at a steady pace: every post is a new chance to reach new people.

On TikTok, much of a small account's reach comes from the For You feed; here's what the FYP is and what decides it.

How to use reach on your account

Rather than looking at one video's reach on its own, compare it with what's normal for your account. Take the reach of your recent organic videos, leaving out the promoted ones, and find the median: that's your reference point. A video above that median has reached more people than usual.

And measure each platform separately: reach on TikTok and on Instagram isn't calculated the same way or reaching the same audience.

Frequently asked questions

Are reach and impressions the same?

No. Impressions, like views, count every time the content is shown. Reach counts different accounts.

Why has my organic reach dropped?

It could be the topic, the hook, the timing or one particular video's luck. Before drawing conclusions, compare several videos with your median, not just one.

Your next step: note the reach of your last five organic videos and work out their median.
