Retention is the share of your audience that keeps watching as the video goes on. On TikTok it shows up as a curve: it starts with everyone who opened the video and drops each time someone swipes to the next one. Reading it tells you the exact second you lose people.

What exactly does retention measure?

In each video's analytics, TikTok Studio shows a few related figures:

  • The retention curve: the share of viewers still watching at each second.
  • Average watch time: how much, on average, each person watches.
  • Watched full video: the share of viewers who reach the end.

All three tell the same story from different angles. Average watch time is one number that's easy to compare; the curve tells you where the problem is.

How to read the retention curve

Almost every curve drops fast at the start and then levels out. Look at three zones:

  1. The first seconds. A steep drop here usually means the hook doesn't land or takes too long to arrive. Go through the types of hook and try another way to open.
  2. The steps in the middle. If the curve falls sharply at one point, check what happens at that second: a long explanation, a slow cut, a pause.
  3. The end. If the curve rises at the end, some people are rewatching or letting it loop; on very short videos that's common.

A flat curve after the opening is a good sign: whoever stays, stays to the end.

What's a good retention rate?

It depends on the video's length, format and topic, so there's no single number that works for everyone. A useful way to think about it: you can't compare a fifteen-second video with a one-minute one by average watch time in seconds, but you can by the shape of their curves.

The comparison that works is with yourself. Take your videos of similar length and see which holds people best in the first seconds. If you want to understand the rest of the numbers the platform gives you, the guide to TikTok and Instagram analytics goes through them one by one.

Retention and the For You feed

TikTok takes into account how each person interacts with videos to decide what to recommend, and watching a video to the end is one of those interactions. That's why retention and getting on the FYP go together: a video people finish has more reason to keep being shown.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I see a video's retention on TikTok?

In TikTok Studio, in each video's analytics. The curve sits in the views section.

Does Instagram have retention?

Yes, Instagram also shows retention data in reels insights. But read it separately: don't mix the two platforms' numbers.

Your next step: open the curve on your last three videos and note the second where each one drops most.
