FYP stands for "For You Page": TikTok's For You feed, the one that opens when you launch the app, full of videos TikTok recommends to each person. "Getting on the FYP" means your video has been shown in the For You feed of people who don't follow you.

What decides which videos show up on the For You page?

TikTok explains that its recommendation system weighs each person's interactions (videos they like or share, accounts they follow, what they comment), the video's information (captions, sounds, hashtags) and, with less weight, device and account settings such as language or country. It also says that neither follower count nor having had well-performing videos before are direct factors (how TikTok recommends videos, checked 2026-11-04).

For a small account that's good news: every video gets its chance, even with few followers. It's also a warning: one video that worked doesn't promise the next one will.

Does adding #fyp or #foryou help?

Not the way people tend to think. A hashtag describes the video, and #fyp says nothing about what yours is about. Use hashtags that describe the topic (#easyrecipes, #houseplants) and let the content do the work.

How do you improve your chances of getting on the FYP?

  1. Hook people in the first seconds: if viewers swipe away straight off, that's a bad sign. Here are the seven types of hook to start with.
  2. Stick to a specific topic, so the video reaches people interested in it.
  3. Deliver what you promise at the start: people watching to the end counts.
  4. Post at a pace you can keep up; every video is a new chance.

The guide on how to grow on TikTok goes through it step by step.

How to tell whether a video got on the FYP

In a video's analytics, TikTok Studio shows where its views came from, and one of the sources is the For You feed. If most come from there, the video is being recommended to new people.

To know whether it "did well", don't compare it with huge accounts: compare it with your normal video at the same age. A video with more views than your normal one at 24 hours is reaching more people than usual, wherever they came from.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FYP the same as the TikTok algorithm?

Not quite. The FYP is the feed; the recommendation system is what decides which videos appear in it.

Do you need followers to get on the FYP?

No. TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor, so a new account can also show up in other people's For You feed.

Your next step: check where the views on your last three videos came from, and compare them with your normal video.
